UPDATE: My favorite quote from this book, "...you should never punch an armored maja."
Current pulp fiction...
Here's the recent fantasy that I found and am reading. It's not bad. I finished the first of the series and am moving on to the second.
I'm always on the lookout for a fantasy or science-fiction novel that doesn't have prophecies. This series has the usual prophecy basis, so I focus on the visuals the author is creating. For some reason I like it when the characters make themselves heros rather than being born into a very lucky situation. I see the prophecy method of writing as formulaic fiction where the character wanders around blindly with others telling him more of the picture as s/he fumbles along. I think Raymond Feist's Riftwar Saga is a good example of fiction where a prophecy isn't used.
