I actually had my bag searched this morning. No, this isn't a screed about a police state in Amerika. I was just surprised. For those of you who don't know, New York City has implemented "random" bag searches for the subways. I quoted random because if the bag searches were anything else (like targetted) then the city would get slapped with a lawsuit.
I've mostly avoided having my bag searched because the police like to hang around Grand Central and "randomly" search minorities' backpacks. I know this from several reports from my friends who frequent that stop. One of which had been searched three times already...on separate days by the same officer. He didn't seem to mind, though, they were just doing their job.
I really don't think I look that threatening walking to work with my wife in business casual, but I do have a black backpack. So I was pulled aside and unzipped a few pockets for the officer and ran to catch the train pulling into the station. Safe from further molestation I pondered this new development in my usually uneventful commute. I wondered how many terrorists use Swiss Army backpacks to deliver bombs. I doubt there are many if at all. But then I wondered exactly what is the preferred backpack brand of terrorists? I'm thinking Eastpack?
So, are you going to let your wife kick your ass again?
